How many jobs exist for truck drivers?
There are currently over 3 million heavy truck drivers in the United States and that number is projected to grow by an estimated 320,000 by 2014 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment Statistics. Starting a career as a professional driver is a great way to ensure you never see an unemployment office again.
I am new to the trucking industry. What do I need to know?
For most people, trying to figure out the best way to start a new career as a professional truck driver can be a challenging venture. In fact, many times people looking to get into the industry find there can be a significant financial barrier to entry. The most common way people begin a new career as a professional truck driver is by enrolling in a truck driving school. However, most truck driving schools cost between $5,000 to $7,000 and require students to either pay up front or secure a high-interest loan to cover tuition. The latter most often requires a cosigner and inflates the total cost to well over $10,000 to $12,000 after interest and finance charges. The reality is: Paying $10,000 to $12,000 via a high-interest loan is neither the only nor smartest way to start a career as a professional truck driver!
In addition, the vast number of new drivers go from job to job at three or four different trucking companies in their first one to two years on the job. The reason for this is because it’s very difficult for a person entering the field to find the right company to work for without having the benefit of proper guidance in determining which company is the best fit for you.
The result can be costly. Why? Because all trucking companies require new drivers with less than one to two years of experience go through a company training program. Requirements include driving alongside an experienced driver for four to eight weeks, during which time you can only earn a maximum of three to four hundred dollars per week. Needless to say, if you switch companies, you will end up retraining each time at a lower pay than you would earn if you'd stuck with the right company from the start! Finding the right match from the beginning will ensure this won’t happen to you.
At TRS we’re dedicated to helping YOU discover the right method of entering the industry, so you find the right job, right from the start.
